A Nap-tural State of Mind

This is one of my first blogs about my personal journey to NAPTURAL hair - meaning without the use of chemicals to straighten my hair. I remember when I sat in the chair for the first time to get my hair "relaxed" at the tender age of 10 AND I also remember the first time all my luscious locks fell out at the age of 13. My battle with the creamy crack, as it's affectionately known, had been a 16 year journey and I am finally at the point where I am rehabilitated from it. For so long I equated straight hair with some sort of perfection and wouldn't be caught dead with "new growth" but now I embrace what God has given and rock it however I choose! I decided in June 2010 that I was going NAPtural and detoxing my hair so that it could get back to it's infant state. Now, almost 6 months later I can say this has been a tough decision but I so appreciate the rewards of my labor. I flip flop between NAPtural and straight but now I straighten my hair from the help of my beautician and her majestic dryer &  flat iron. Even with that I limit how much heat goes onto my hair. So this is for the other Ex-Relaxer junkies or hopefuls - when I'm NAPtural a great transition style I wear is a Bantu twist out and it goes like this......

Step 1: I wash and condition my hair with Cantu Shea Butter products to maintain the natural oils and it keeps my hair from tangling.
Step 2: Section hair off in sections and do two-strand twists then coil them into the Bantu knots

Step 3:  Allow the hair to air dry (preferably over night) then carefully remove each twist and pick out.  It should look something like this...
Once your hair is out, feel free to wear barrettes, pull some into your face, wear a headband or rock it however you like!  Whatever you do remember it's all about healthy hair and being fabulous in the process!
